Planning a trip to Famagusta? Whether you are arriving from Europe, Turkey, or beyond, getting here is easier than you might think. With its stunning beaches, historic Walled City, and unique cultural atmosphere, Famagusta is worth the journey. Here are the main ways to reach this beautiful Mediterranean destination:
1. Via Larnaca International Airport (Cyprus)
For many travelers, Larnaca International Airport in the Republic of Cyprus is the closest and most convenient option. From here, you can reach Famagusta in about an hour by car.
Car Rental: The most flexible way, allowing you to explore the island at your own pace.
Taxi: Direct rides are available from the airport to Famagusta.
👉 Important note: If you are using Larnaca Airport, make sure you hold an EU passport. Non-EU citizens may find Ercan Airport a more convenient entry point.
2. Via Ercan International Airport (Northern Cyprus)
If you are flying from Turkey, you can land at Ercan International Airport, located near Nicosia (Lefkoşa). From there, Famagusta is about a 45-minute drive.
KIBHAS Airport Shuttle Buses: An affordable and reliable option with regular services connecting Ercan to Famagusta.
Car Rental: Available at the airport for those who prefer freedom to travel.
Taxi: Quick and direct transport, ideal if you are traveling with luggage or in a group.
3. Crossing from Nicosia (Lefkoşa)
If you are already in Cyprus and want to cross from south to north, Nicosia (Lefkoşa) is the main gateway.
You can cross on foot at the Ledra Palace or Lokmacı Gate, right in the heart of the capital.
Once in the north, buses and taxis can take you directly to Famagusta.
4. Do You Need a Visa?
Good news—no visa is required to cross into Northern Cyprus for most travelers. However, always check your passport validity and entry requirements before traveling.
Which Option is Best?
EU travelers often prefer Larnaca Airport, thanks to direct flights from many European cities.
Travelers from Turkey or other non-EU countries may find Ercan Airport the easier and more flexible choice.
5. Currency & Money Tips 💶💱
The official currency in Northern Cyprus is the Turkish Lira (₺).
Euros (€), British Pounds (£), and US Dollars ($) are widely accepted in tourist areas, but you’ll often get a better deal paying in Turkish Lira.
ATMs are available throughout Famagusta, dispensing Turkish Lira. Some also allow withdrawals in Euros.
Credit cards are accepted in most restaurants, hotels, and shops, but it’s wise to carry some cash for taxis, small cafés, and local markets.
Exchange rates vary, so using ATMs or official exchange offices usually gives you the best value.
✨ Whichever route you take, the journey to Famagusta is part of the adventure. Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with turquoise waters, golden beaches, and a historic city full of stories waiting to be discovered.
