Explore The Local Civil Society: A Museum in the Making, Rooted in the City’s Own Memory.

What does a city remember? That question drives the Mağusa Kent Müzesi  (Famagusta City Museum), an ambitious community-led project set up by the Mağusa Kent Müzesi Derneği (MAKEMÜD).The museum project aims to preserve and share Famagusta's rich history through both physical and digital means, functioning simultaneously as a City Memory Centre.

The museum's growing collection spans stories, people, places, objects, documents, newspaper clippings, films, and podcasts — all contributed by residents and gathered by researchers. It's not a top-down institution; it's a living archive built within city by the people.

The museum's physical home will be the Diocare Bastion (6 Numaralı Mazgal) — one of 13 bastions built into Famagusta's famous Venetian-era walls. The project received official approval from the Higher Council of Monuments (AYK) and was publicly launched on 22 March 2025, with renovation works beginning two days later. The space comprises eight vaulted chambers on two levels, totalling 154.65 m², and will host both permanent and rotating exhibitions using primarily digital display methods. The internal space was designed by architect Aysel Alihan, in collaboration with restoration and landscape specialists.

You can explore the museum's digital collection online at magusakentmuzesi.com, including its library, virtual tour, and podcast archive. The museum also runs educational programmes for schools and welcomes volunteers and donors who want to help keep Famagusta's memory alive.
